The Indian Space Research Organization(ISRO) that comes with a vision to "Utilize space technology for national development while pursuing planetary exploration space and science research" is an esteemed Space Research Organization of Government of India, located in Bengaluru, and was established in 1969 by replacing the Indian national committee for space research (INCOSPAR). Also, the services and products of ISRO are promoted by Antrix corporation that was established in 1992 and is known as its commercial arm.
In this article, we will take a look at ISRO and the various missions that it has undertaken in the past.
ISRO is an organization controlled by the government of India and is responsible for space research and was established in order to focus on the talent of Indian researchers into advancing the space program. The esteemed org. has attained a truly remarkable position of being one of the leading and most prestigious space research organizations in the world over the years and under the guidance of the Indian scientific community has also successfully conducted different kinds of operations. ISRO has built many works and field installations together with the international space research community on various bilateral and multilateral research agreements. To add up even more, in last four decades, ISRO has also been serving both Indian and foreign clients with the help of their launch vehicle fleet.
When we talk about their achievements and projects undertaken in all these years, There have been many full-fledged projects that formed the base for setting up the ISRO like the Rohini Sounding Rocket (RSR) program and the INCOSPAR (Indian Committee for Space Research). It was the success of these very projects that laid the cornerstone and foundation for the formation of the ISRO in the year 1969.
ISRO has also developed many launch vehicles that include SLV (Satellite Launch Vehicle), ASLV (Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle), PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle)-one of the most trusted satellite launch vehicle in the world, GSLV (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle) and GSLV Mark III in the order of their creation. Also, The first satellite developed by ISRO on 19 April 1975 was Aryabhata that was launched by the Soviet Union.
One of its recent major achievements that turned into a record was the placing of 20 satellites in a single payload in the year 2016. Other of its remarkable achievements in the list include: Rohini satellite placed by launch vehicle SLV 3(1980), First successful launch of ASLV placing SROSS-C satellite(1992), launch of PSLV placed IRS-P2 in orbit(1994), First successful launch of GSLV with GSAT-1 satellite(2001), successfully placing of Mangalayaan(launched in 2014) in Mars orbit(2014), creation of a web-based 3d satellite imagery tool -the Indian incarnation of Google earth called Bhuvan.
Not to forget that ISRO(India) is the ONLY country to have reached Mars in its First attempt:
In the same context, As per existing plans, the second mission of ISRO to Mars is tentatively taken down for 2021-2022 timeframe and it may also involve putting a robot on the surface of the Red Planet.
Talking about what's currently on its list, and all that it plans to achieve soon, ISRO is also currently working on a Human Spaceflight Program that will undertake a human spaceflight mission to carry a crew of two to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and return them safely to a destination on earth that will be predefined.
ISRO is also working on the idea of missions to Venus and Jupiter and is studying their feasibility as well, Since the chance of launching a satellite to Venus, considering the distance and earth’s position, comes once in 19 months.
And also, as a follow-up, a mission for Mars Orbiter Mission(MoM) is also being planned.
Apart from all this, Work on Chandrayaan 2, a solo project that involves a Lander and a rover is on as well and it will be for the first time that ISRO can have its lander on the Moon that will give the agency minute details of the earth's natural satellite. It is expected to launch soon the following year.
ISRO, a globally competent space agency, in terms of space research technology is expected to outshine in the field with its current success of Chandrayaan and upcoming project of MARS mission.
